Does it hurt to say “winter”?

Having talked of many winter problems, let us now move onto the lips. They need special care, as they tend to become drier and more cracked than your skin. In fact they even become painful. This is because, says Enrich Salons, there are very few oil glands in the very thin skin covering the lips. This means less moisture on the lips. Other reasons can be lack of nutrients, allergies, colds, excessive indoor heating and a million other things besides. So how do you take care of them in winter? Stop licking your lips and making them drier. Licking your lips gives very very temporary relief, but the digestive enzymes and bacteria found in saliva dry your lips even further. If it is an allergic reaction, relook at the ingredients in your toothpaste, lip balm, mouthwash and lipstick. Avoid flavouring agents, cinnamate, oxybenzone and dyes and see if your lip condition improves. Applying a lip balm or petrolatum based ointment at regular intervals through the day is a very good habit to have. They seal in the moisture and protect those rosy pinks. Drink lots of fluids, if water is not your drink of the season. If not at least ten glasses of water, go for soups, fruit and vegetables that are high in water content. It may be that you are vitamin deficient. B complex vitamins and riboflavin help your skin retain moisture. You can find these in green vegetables, beans, lentils, dairy products and nuts. A multivitamin supplement, after consulting your doctor, is also a good idea. Exfoliate your lips twice a week by gently rubbing with a damp cloth or toothbrush. Try and set up a humidifier in your home during winter. Not only for your lips but your whole body. If none of the above work, consider consulting a...

Winters are hot!

While we have talked, talked, and talked, and still left unsaid many things, about how important it is to moisturise, moisture, and moisturise your skin during winter, we have not said enough about what goes on it. The make up. Enrich Salons fills us in on that. In winters you need more glamour and more polishing on face frame as opposed to the fresh light summer look. And shades of velvet seem to fit that bill. Winter woman, go for velvet, and you can’t go wrong. Deep green, chocolate and smokeyeye shades are the way to go, as are berry tones for the cheeks and lips. If gloss is your choice, no worries. Choose gloss in fruity and spicy shades. Explore. Here are some tips that really work in making eyes turn during winter: Cut your nails to your fingertips and use a copper or blackberry coloured nail polish. Dark, short, and sexy. Now onto your face. Use a moisturiser or a sun protection cream with a broad spectrum sun protection. Cover it with a light matte foundation, a tinted shimmery powder, but don’t overdo the shimmer. A blush on, specially if sheer and creamy, can boost the subtlety of your winter make up just up to the right notch. As for shades, go neutral. Light browns, grays, pinks, and purples? Talk through winter through lips that make the others gape rather than hear. Moisturise your lips and keep them hydrated with the lip balm. A lip gloss is a good idea. You can replace your lipsticks with tinted lips balms in honey, blackberry and red currant tones. Wow! What about the eyes? The part of your face that talks more than your lips ever do? Smokey eyes are a striking way to go in winter, which can be complemented with cinnamon and coffee eye shadows. Add a bit of sheen on your eyes if you have chosen a nude shade for your lips. Winter is about dark colours. Define your eyes with chocolate brown or charcoal liners along your upper lashes. Experiment with mascara. If not now, when? Try coloured ones like burgundy, navy and auburn. No. We have not forgotten. Fragrance. No season carries them better. Stick to essential oils, spices, and natural aromas....

If you have to cry, do so in winter!

Help! It’s ultraviolet rays time! It always is, but during winter it hits our eyes harder. Yes it is worse to those surrounded by snow, but it cause enough damage to others too. It can cause cataracts and photo keratitis, which is like having sunburn on your eye ball! Another thing to consider is the sudden dryness of the weather. This leads to less moisture inside the eyes and the tear glands just cannot keep up. This leads to itchy dry eyes that hurt, cause blurring of vision, make you feel like your eyes are burning, or watery vision as the eyes try to extra compensate. But don’t worry. Keep your eyes peeled while you read what Enrich Salons says about how to tackle all this and more. Wrap around sunglasses at any time is a good idea so the rays can’t sneak in through the corners. If you are into winter sports protective sport goggles with polycarbonate lenses fitted to your eyes are a must. Did you know that warming your feet is like applying a hair dryer to your eye ball? Make use of this knowledge when in a cold car. Turn the heat on so it heats your feet. Also if you turn on the face blast, it will actually dry out your eyes more. No you do not want that. Apart from ultraviolet rays and dryness there are other problems. Here are a few tips on how to tackle them: Get a comprehensive and annual eye examination done during winter. Do not share make up, as viruses like pink eye are very common and spread fast. This rule applies throughout the year, with a special emphasis in winter. Contact lens users use drops more often than usual. To keep your eyes hydrated here are a few tips: Use eye drops. Have a lot of soup since in winter you do not feel like drinking so much water. Eat fish. The Omega 3 acids decrease eye inflammation. If you don’t like fish, take a fish oil supplement. This will also increase the productivity of your tear glands to the required level. Lastly, use eye make up from good brands only as your eyes are specially susceptible this time of the...
